WHO – The Organization That Protects All
WHO is a global medical organization that aims to improve the quality of life by preventing and treating diseases, disability and infections of all kinds. The World Health Organization is an inter-governmental agency of the United Nations concerned with international public health. The WHO Constitution, that sets the rules and principles of the WHO, states that its main goal is “the achievement by all people of the highest achievable degree of health throughout the world”. It also states that its functions are meant to be managed on the basis of aetiological co-ordination. The functions and activities of WHO are listed in a document called the Declaration of Convention.
WHO is one of the world’s major agencies concerned with the field of public health and medical research? With more than 66 million workers around the globe, WHO is one of the largest organizations of its kind. WHO is totally dependent on volunteers? Its budget is provided by the United Nation. Since its establishment in 1948, WHO has been providing assistance to countries in the effort to fight against disease and protect the world’s population from serious threats such as epidemics.
WHO is part of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)? It carries out research and work on a global scale to counter disease and prepare preventive measures. WHO is also responsible for the coordination of national activities concerning occupational and epidemiological hazards, promoting healthcare, preventing disease, and improving supplies of essential medicines and equipment? WHO is not only responsible for preventing and controlling disease, but also for protecting the world population from hazardous conditions such as the environmental contamination? Its programs aim at the protection of human health, animal health, environment and food crops. All these efforts contribute towards the ability of WHO to provide accurate information on all diseases and health hazards.
WHO is also responsible for developing policies to protect human health and natural resources and to conserve and develop them? It also provides support to demarcate and establish national programmes for the control, prevention and treatment of communicable diseases. WHO is the regional center for disease surveillance and consultative activities within the WHO system.
WHO was formed by the World Health Organization and the United Nations, with the support and contributions of all member states? The mission of WHO is to promote international cooperation in order to achieve the goals of universal health coverage and quality health services. The Secretariat of WHO is located in Geneva and is led by a director who also is a member of the board of directors of WHO. The chief management and budgeting of WHO are done from Geneva. WHO headquarters is in Geneva and the WHO Emergence/Office is located in New Delhi. The other regions where WHO is located are Africa, Asia, Australia and America.
Since its inception, WHO has been able to contain and fight epidemics and protect the world’s population from various diseases. However, since its establishment, there have been cases of measles, diphtheria, cholera and even swine flu. Many countries around the world have also experienced the devastating results of these diseases. Thus, the importance of WHO cannot be overlooked and should not be underestimated.
